Pre and Postnatal Services
The 3 exercise options at Move for pregnant and postnatal women are Pilates Mat classes, Pilates Studio Programmes and Hydrotherapy classes. If clients have back pain or any other relevant problems they undergo an individual assessment session with the physiotherapist prior to attending their first group session but women without pre-existing conditions can proceed directly to mat or hydro classes.:
pilates mat classes
In a small group setting clients work on the mat using balls, hand weights, resistance tubing and other small props. These classes blend Pilates principles such as core stability with general strength training and education on the physical side of pregnancy and motherhood.
hydrotherapy
Our hydro classes are specifically designed for pregnant/postnatal women in the supported environment of warm water. This is often particularly comfortable in the later stages of pregnancy but is suitable for any stage, and can form a nice mix together with the mat classes on land. Hydrotherapy classes include exercises which blend Pilates principles such as core stability with general fitness.
pilates studio programmes
These classes are particularly suited to women with more specific needs, such as pre-existing back problems, but are available to all clients. The studio programme involves a more detailed biomechanical assessment and four individual sessions before progressing to classes. Classes involve a maximum of 5 participants, all working on their individual programmes under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Postnatally, clients often progress to these classes to increase the challenge as they get back into shape and fit for the demands of new motherhood!
For your safety and wellbeing it is recommended to wait 12 weeks before commencing a new exercise programme in pregnancy and we also require a medical clearance form signed by your GP, Obstetrician or midwife prior to your first session. Postnatally, we recommend waiting 6 weeks after normal vaginal delivery or 12 weeks following a caesarean before returning to exercise classes.
