Latest Research Shows Exercise Helps Arthritis Sufferers
- December 2009

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease of the joints and is the most common form of arthritis with over 1.6 million Australians who have been diagnosed with this condition.

The average age of onset is 45 and more females are affected than men.

The major cause of OA is abnormal stress on joint cartilage and so risk factors include obesity, poor alignment of the joint, repetitive joint use, joint trauma including injury and surgery, and muscle weakness.

When the joint cartilage is damaged, the bones grow to try and repair the damage but instead of making things better, the bone grows abnormal and becomes misshapen making the joint painful and sometimes unstable.

Knees and hips are the most common joints affected, followed by hands and feet.

The most common symptoms of OA include:
  • Pain which is usually deep and aching, and stiffness
  • Creaking of the joint and decreased range of movement
  • Weakened muscles around the affected joint
  • Decreased physical function eg. difficulty with walking, stairs or housework
  • Joint swelling
  • Joint deformity

Although there is no cure for OA, many of the risk factors are modifiable.

Exercise can help by:
  • improving muscle strength
  • decreasing weight
  • improve co-ordination of muscle contractions
These can help to alleviate symptoms and slow disease progression.

Recent evidence supports this idea and has shown that exercise (either land based or hydrotherapy) that is closely monitored by a health professional can significantly improve levels of pain and physical dysfunction associated with OA.

At Move we have developed a treatment/exercise programme specifically for OA sufferers that is based on the latest research and international recommendations.

A typical programme will include:
  • Assessment - to identify the problems contributing your pain
  • Advice - giving you the information you need to improve
  • Exercise - a specific programme to address the problems identified in your assessment
  • Education - on how the disease works, what the programme includes and what benefits you can expect

New Website - November 2009

I hope you like the new lay out and design of our website. Thank you to Greg from Gumi Gumi for his help in getting this up and running. If you have any suggestions regarding the website content, I would love to hear them. You can contact me directly on this page - Contact Us

We will be starting a regular newsletter which will also be featured on this part of our website. The first one should be up in the next week featuring the current best practice for managing osteoarthritis of the knee (which not surprisingly involves exercise!)
